What is personal care?

Personal care services encompass non-medical tasks performed to help individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs). These tasks can include items that help the person physically, like toileting and dressing or they can assist with mental load and household chores like medication reminders, meal planning, cooking and laundry. Some organizations also offer companion services as part of their offerings. There are a variety of reasons that someone may need to receive personal care services. After a hospital stay or surgery, personal care services can help an individual stay in their home while they recover or help them age in place. Personal care services can be offered for a short period of time but are often long-term arrangements.

Why is personal care important?

9/10 Americans age 65 and older want to stay at home for as long as possible, but 70% will need assistance at some point according to data from Home Care Association of America (HCAOA) and the Global Coalition on Aging. To put that in perspective, that means that around 39 million out of 50 million people will need at least some level of personal care if they are going to remain at home.

HCHB Personal Care is a key building block for our vision to provide ONE solution for all home-based care. Adding this service line to our product gives Homecare Homebase the opportunity to support care for patients across a longer time span and will help alleviate some the challenges faced by providers establishing scalable personal care services.

Evaluating EHRs for scalable personal care:

There are four important aspects than an EHR must customize to address personal care needs. Homecare Homebase carefully crafted our HCHB Personal Care service line to tackle the unique challenges that these providers face. Some of the most complex problems are found within:

  • Authorization management
  • Scheduling
  • EVV
  • Care Management
