Supporting Home Care Aides

Home Care Aides play a crucial role in supporting many aging Americans and deserve recognition for the vital care they provide. To honor their dedications, the Home Care Scholarship program was launched in 2021 to assist home care aides pursuing a nursing degree.

$2,000 scholarships are awarded to 3 exceptional home care aides, helping them advance their education and career in home-based care. This program not only supports their professional growth, but also acknowledges their commitment to the industry.

What is a valuable lesson you’ve learned from working in the homecare field?

“A key lesson that I’ve learned in working in the homecare field is that every person deserves dignity, patience and compassionate care. Homecare is not about starting work and completing tasks and clocking out at the end of the shift. It’s about building trust; listening and understanding each person’s personalized needs. Learning this has helped me become more patient and empathetic while reminding me that even a smile can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.”

What does being a Homecare Aide Scholarship honoree mean to you?

“To be honored as Hospice Aide for the home care scholarship is a blessing. To be able to be recognized for my dedication and passion for nursing has been such an amazing feeling. To be considered and knowing my efforts aren’t going unnoticed just validates I’ve always been going in the right direction. Being an Aide isnt just about assisting, it’s about helping patients keep their dignity and feeling comfortable and respected. I’m excited to be able to continue on with my education to ensure I can keep helping and growing in the field.”

What is a valuable lesson you’ve learned from working in the homecare field?

“I’ve learned the importance of patience, empathy, compassion, respect and dignity. The smallest things to us mean the world to our patients. For example, taking patients outside for fresh air; singing and dancing with them; joking and laughing with them. Companionship really makes a patient’s day.

What guidance or words of wisdom would you share with those who want to follow a similar path to yours?

“When days get hard, remember why you started.”

“A valuable lesson I’ve learned from working in the homecare field is the true importance of treating others the way you would want to be treated. I’ve seen firsthand how compassion, patience, and dignity can make all the difference in someone’s care. Every person I care for deserves to feel valued, respected, and at peace.”

What guidance or words of wisdom would you share with those who want to follow a similar path to yours?

“No matter what your career path looks like, always remember why you started. Look at all your options, stay open to learning, and never lose sight of the impact you can make in someone’s life.”

What does being a Homecare Aide Scholarship honoree mean to you?

“To receive this scholarship is one of the most amazing things! Being an aide is by far one of the hardest, but most rewarding jobs. My goal has always been to advance in my career and become a nurse and this scholarship makes the financial burden a little easier.”

What is a valuable lesson you’ve learned from working in the homecare field?

“I see patients every day that are at the end of life and families that are trying to make their loved one’s last days comfortable and full of love. I have learned to be more compassionate and to open my heart to be more than just someone provides personal care but also to be an ear to listen and a shoulder to cry on during a very difficult journey.”
